Hawaii

Slide Background

Don your grass skirt and head to the center of the Pacific Ocean where you will find an archipelago of over 19 distinct volcanic islands, called Hawaii!  There are eight major islands that are open to tourism.  Hawaii is considered the “big island” and is home to one of the most active volcanoes on Earth.  But the archipelago has still maintained its natural beauty despite major corporations setting their sights on it.  Numerous waterfalls and rainforests evoke memories of what the islands might have looked like.   Maui, the second largest of the islands has one of the most scenic routes, the road to Hana.  It leads you over bridges and past glistening waterfalls.  Visit the island of Oahu to see the city of Honolulu.

Where to visit in Hawaii?

Hawaii, the “Big Island”, is the largest of the islands.  With large, active volcanoes, a trip to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is definitely worth a visit.   The Park is also home to the largest mountain in the world in volume, Mauna Loa, and the tallest mountain in the world as measured from its base on the sea floor to its peak, Mauna Kea. Hilo, on the east coast, is the capital city.  While you are there, visit Rainbow Falls.  Try to visit early in the day as you have a better chance of seeing the rainbow created by the mist. Surf culture is big in the city.  Take a trip to Richardson’s Ocean Park which is a popular spot for occasional waves.  Snorkelling is huge here and you will also find people just relaxing on the beach or in the grass reading and enjoying the scenery.  If it is swimming you are after, Four Mile, is the most popular spot.  There is no beach but it is like a large sale water swimming pool with sand at the bottom.  Take a helicopter tour over the macadamia nut plantations and explore the Kaumana Caves. Kailua-Kona on the west coast is also worth a visit and great for rafting.

Oahu

Nicknamed “The Gathering Place”, it is the most populous and developed island and home to the city of Honolulu!  The island is the most popular tourist destination in Hawaii.  Honolulu is like any other city with all the amenities and conveniences.  It has a bustling nightlife, exciting cultural events and a variety of dining and shopping options   However Honolulu does not represent the vision that most tourists have of a holiday in Hawaii.  It has all of the hustle and bustle but very little of the peacefulness and tranquillity associated with the resort.  However, a calming oasis can be found on Oahu, you just need to know where to look. Waikiki Beach is arguably the best known tourist destination in Hawaii.  Natural beauty can be found in the two mountain ranges, the Koolau and Waianae ranges, that make up Oahu.

Maui

Maui is the second largest of the islands.  It is nicknamed "the Valley Isle" for the narrow plain between Haleakala and the West Maui mountains.  On the east side of the island is the tiny village of Hana, which can only be reached by one of the most winding and beautiful roads in the world.  Hana is surrounded by dense rainforests, a perfect place to fly, by zip-line, through the jungle.  Visit Haleakala National park while you are there as it offers stunning views of the island.

Other islands

Kauai is nicknamed “The Garden Isle” and is home to several natural wonders, such as Wailua River, Waimea Canyon, and the Na Pali Coast. Mount Waialeale is known as one of the rainiest spots in the world, so bring an anorak

Lanai was, at one time, the largest pineapple plantation in the world.   It is now home to several exclusive resorts.
